A conventional throat damper is a loose metal-on-metal seal — it leaks. A top-sealing damper closes with a gasket at the very top of the flue, which stops the year-round loss of heated and cooled air and keeps rain, animals and downdrafts out. For an efficiency upgrade, it's one of the most noticeable.

We size the top-sealing damper to your flue.
We install the damper assembly at the top of the flue.
We route the operating cable down to a control in the firebox.
We confirm it opens for burning and seals tight when closed.
With Pittsburgh's cold winters and warm, humid summers, the year-round air loss through an old throat damper adds up. A top-sealing damper is a practical efficiency upgrade that also keeps our wet weather out of the flue — two benefits in one part.
It seals the flue with a gasket at the top instead of a loose metal plate in the throat, so far less heated or cooled air escapes up the chimney when the fireplace isn't in use.
It functions as a cap when closed, keeping out rain and animals. We'll confirm your flue is fully protected as part of the install.
